Context of Isaiah 64:5
3In the past, you did great things, and they surprised us. You came down and the mountains shook with fear. 4From the beginning, nobody has heard of any God like you. You come to help those people who trust in you. Nobody has ever seen or heard of a God like you! You help people who are happy when they do what is right. People like that obey your commands. But we continued to do wrong things, even when you were angry with us. We have done bad things for a long time, so will you ever come to save us? 6Our sins have made us all like unclean people, who cannot worship you. Even the good things that we try to do are like dirty bits of cloth. Our sins will blow us all away, as the wind blows away dead leaves. 7Nobody prays in your name, or calls out to you to help them. It seems that you have turned away from us. You have left us for our sins to rule us.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Thou meetest him that rejoiceth and worketh righteousness "Thou meetest with joy those who work righteousness" - The Syriac reads בעשי שש אתה פוגע poga attah shesh baashi, as above. In those is continuance, and we shall be saved "Because of our deeds, for we have been rebellious" - ונושע עולם בהם bahem olam venivvashea . I am fully persuaded that these words as they stand in the present Hebrew text are utterly unintelligible; there is no doubt of the…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5Thou meetest him - Perhaps there are few verses in the Bible that have given more perplexity to interpreters than this; and after all that has been done, the general impression seems to be, that it is wholly inexplicable, or without meaning - as it certainly is in our translation. Noyes says of his own translation of the last member of the verse, I am not satisfied with this or any other translation of the line which I have seen.‘ Lowth says, I am fully…Read the comment
