Context of Matthew 19:24

22When the young man heard this, he went away. He was not happy. He was feeling sad because he was a very rich man. 23Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘What I say is true. It is very difficult for rich people to let God rule in their lives. The hole in a needle is very small. A camel cannot go through it! But I tell you, it is even more difficult than that for a rich person to let God rule in their life.’ 25When the disciples heard this, they were even more surprised. They said, ‘So perhaps God will not save anyone!’ 26Jesus looked at them and he replied, ‘For people, it really is impossible. But God can do it. God can do everything.’

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 24A camel - Instead of , camel, six MSS. read , cable, a mere gloss inserted by some who did not know that the other was a proverb common enough among the people of the east. There is an expression similar to this in the Koran. "The impious, who in his arrogance shall accuse our doctrine of falsity, shall find the gates of heaven shut: nor shall he enter there till a camel shall pass through the eye of a needle. It is thus that we shall recompense the…Read the comment

He was a ruler (Luke); probably a ruler in a synagogue, or of the great council of the nation; a place to which he was chosen on account of his unblemished character and promising talents. He came running (Mark); evincing great earnestness and anxiety, He fell upon his knees (Mark); not to worship him, but to pay the customary respectful…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 23-30Verses 23-30 Though Christ spoke so strongly, few that have riches do not trust in them. How few that are poor are not tempted to envy! But men's earnestness in this matter is like their toiling to build a high wall to shut themselves and their children out of heaven. It should be satisfaction to those who are in a low condition, that they are not exposed to the temptations of a high and prosperous condition. • Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 24Easier for a camel: This analogy emphasizes how difficult it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. Some manuscripts use a Greek word meaning rope (kamilos) instead of camel (kamēlos), a difference of only one letter. to pass through the eye of a needle: This image suggests it is impossible for wealthy people to enter the kingdom of God. But the situation is not completely hopeless (Matthew 19:26–27). See study note on Mark 10:25.Read the comment
