Context of Mark 10:20
18Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you say that I am good? Only God is good. Nobody else. 19You know God's rules: “Do not kill anyone. Do not have sex with anyone who is not your wife. Do not rob anyone. Do not say things that are not true about people. Do not take things that are not yours. Love your father and your mother, and obey them.” ’ ‘Teacher,’ the man replied, ‘I have obeyed all these laws since I was a young man.’ 21Jesus looked at the man and Jesus loved him. Jesus said to him, ‘There is still just one thing that you must do. Go now. Sell everything that you have. Then give the money to poor people. If you do that, you will have many valuable things in heaven. Then come back and be my disciple.’ 22When the man heard that, his face became sad. He was a very rich man. Because of that, he went away and he was very sad.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 17-31Verses 17-31 See this passage illustrated in the notes at Matthew 19:16-30. Mark 10:17 Gone forth - From the place where he had been teaching. Into the way - Into the road or path on his journey. Running - Thus showing the intensity with which he desired to know the way of life. Zeal to know the way to be saved is proper, nor is it possible that it should be too intense if well directed. Nothing else is so important, and nothing demands, therefore, so…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-22Verses 17-22 This young ruler showed great earnestness. He asked what he should do now, that he might be happy for ever. Most ask for good to be had in this world; any good, Psa 4:6; he asks for good to be done in this world, in order to enjoy the greatest good in the other world. Christ encouraged this address by assisting his faith, and by directing his practice. But here is a sorrowful parting between Jesus and this young man. He asks Christ what he…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 20The man's reply showed a lack of understanding about what it really means to keep these commands (see Matthew 5:21–48), but it was not arrogant. The absence of any criticism supports this (compare Mark 12:13–17; Matthew 23:1–36).Read the comment
