Context of Mark 1:2
1This is the start of the good news about Jesus Christ. He is the Son of God. The prophet Isaiah wrote this message from God in his book: ‘Listen! I will send someone to prepare a way for you. He will tell people my message. 3His voice will shout in the wilderness: “The Lord will come soon, so prepare a way for him. Make the paths straight for him.” ’ 4So John went to a place in the wilderness. He baptized people and he spoke a message from God. He said to people, ‘You have done many wrong things. You must turn away from them and change how you live. Then God will forgive you and I will baptize you.’

Commentaries on Mark 1:2
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 2As it is written in the prophets - Rather, As it is written by Isaiah the prophet. I think this reading should be adopted, instead of that in the common text. It is the reading of the Codex Bezae, Vatican, and several other MSS. of great repute. It is found also in the Syriac, Persic, Coptic, Armenian, Gothic, Vulgate, and Itala versions, and in several of the fathers. As this prophecy is found both in Isaiah and Malachi, probably the reading was changed…Read the comment

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2-3Mark includes Old Testament prophecies (messages from God given long ago) to support his account of the good news about Jesus Christ. John the Baptist’s role as a prophet and messenger shows that Jesus is the promised Lord and king. He is the Christ (or Messiah, God’s chosen one) and the Son of God. Isaiah: Mark follows the Jewish practice of mentioning only the best-known source in a quotation. Here he names Isaiah, even though the quotation also…Read the comment
