Context of Luke 13:17
15‘You are wrong,’ the Lord Jesus said to him. ‘You teach one thing but you do something different yourselves. On the day of rest you will undo the rope on your ox or your donkey and take it outside. You then give it water to drink. Is that not true? 16Now look at this woman. She belongs to the family of Abraham. But a bad spirit from the Devil has made her ill for 18 years. It is like he has tied her up. So it must be right to make her free on our day of rest.’ These words made the leaders of the meeting place feel ashamed. But the other people there were very happy. They were happy because they had seen Jesus do many good and powerful things. 18Then Jesus said to them, ‘I will tell you a story about the kingdom of God and what it is like. 19It is like a very small seed of the plant called mustard. A man took this seed and he planted it in his garden. The seed grew and it became a tree. It was so big that birds came and made their nests among its branches.’

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 17Adversaries - The ruler of the synagogue, and those who felt as he did. All the people - The persons who attended the synagogue, and who had witnessed the miracle. It is to be remarked: 1.That those who opposed Christ were chiefly the “rulers.” They had an “interest” in doing it. Their popularity was at stake. They were afraid that he would draw off the people from them. 2.The common people heard him gladly. Many of them believed in him. The condition of…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 10-17Verses 10-17 Our Lord Jesus attended upon public worship on the sabbaths. Even bodily infirmities, unless very grievous, should not keep us from public worship on sabbath days. This woman came to Christ to be taught, and to get good to her soul, and then he relieved her bodily infirmity. This cure represents the work of Christ's grace upon the soul. And when crooked souls are made straight, they will show it by glorifying God. Christ knew that this ruler…Read the comment

- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 10-1711. spirit of infirmity--Compare Lu 13:17, "whom Satan hath bound." From this it is probable, though not certain, that her protracted infirmity was the effect of some milder form of possession; yet she was "a daughter of Abraham," in the same gracious sense, no doubt, as Zaccheus, after his conversion, was "a son of Abraham" (Lu 19:9).Read the comment
