Context of John 8:40
38I speak about the things that my Father has shown me. You do the things that you have heard from your father.’ 39They answered, ‘Abraham is our father!’ Jesus replied, ‘If you really belonged to Abraham's family, you would do the same kind of things that Abraham did. I have told you the true message that I have heard from God. But you want to kill me. Abraham did not do anything like that! 41You do the same things that your own father does.’ They said to Jesus, ‘God himself is our only Father, and we are his proper sons!’ 42Jesus said to them, ‘If God was your Father, you would love me. I came from God and now I am here with you. I did not come on my own behalf, but God sent me.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 40Ye seek to kill me - See John 8:37. This did not Abraham - Or such things Abraham did not do. There are two things noted here in which they differed from Abraham: 1. In seeking to kill him, or in possessing a murderous and bloody purpose. 2. In rejecting the truth as God revealed it. Abraham was distinguished for love to man as well as God. He liberated the captives Genesis 14:14-16; was distinguished for hospitality to strangers Genesis 18:1-8; and…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 37-40Verses 37-40 Our Lord opposed the proud and vain confidence of these Jews, showing that their descent from Abraham could not profit those of a contrary spirit to him. - Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 37-4137-41. ye seek to kill me--He had said this to their face before: He now repeats it, and they do not deny it; yet are they held back, as by some marvellous spell--it was the awe which His combined dignity, courage, and benignity struck into them. because my word hath no place in you--When did ever human prophet so speak of His words? They tell us of "the word of the Lord" coming to them. But here is One who holds up "His word" as that which ought to find…Read the comment
