Context of John 20:18
16Jesus said to her, ‘Mary.’ She turned towards him and she said in the Jewish language, ‘Rabboni!’ (This means ‘Teacher’.) 17Jesus said, ‘Do not hold on to me because I have not gone up to the Father yet. But go to my brothers, the disciples. Tell them, “Now I will go up to my Father. He is also your Father. He is my God, and he is your God.” ’ Mary from Magdala took this message to the disciples. She went to them and she said, ‘I have seen the Lord!’ Then she told them the things that Jesus had said to her. 19On the evening of that same day, the first day of the week, the disciples were meeting together. They had locked the doors of the room because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Then Jesus came and he stood among them. He said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’ 20After he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were very, very happy when they saw the Lord.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-18Verses 11-18 We are likely to seek and find, when we seek with affection, and seek in tears. But many believers complain of the clouds and darkness they are under, which are methods of grace for humbling their souls, mortifying their sins, and endearing Christ to them. A sight of angels and their smiles, will not suffice, without a sight of Jesus, and God's smiles in him. None know, but those who have tasted it, the sorrows of a deserted soul, which has…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18Mary was the first person to see the Lord after his resurrection. She not only saw him, but also heard and touched him (see 1 John 1:1–4). God gave this great honor to a woman whose broken life had experienced healing (Luke 8:2). In Jewish culture, this was surprising. A woman could not even be a witness in court. No Jew at that time would make up such a story.Read the comment
