Context of John 20:18
16Jesus said to her, “Mary.” Turning around, she said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” — which means “Teacher.” 17“Don’t cling to me,” Jesus told her, “since I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them that I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them what he had said to her. 19When it was evening on that first day of the week, the disciples were gathered together with the doors locked because they feared the Jews. Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20Having said this, he showed them his hands and his side. So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-18Verses 11-18 We are likely to seek and find, when we seek with affection, and seek in tears. But many believers complain of the clouds and darkness they are under, which are methods of grace for humbling their souls, mortifying their sins, and endearing Christ to them. A sight of angels and their smiles, will not suffice, without a sight of Jesus, and God's smiles in him. None know, but those who have tasted it, the sorrows of a deserted soul, which has…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18Mary was the first person to see the Lord after his resurrection. She not only saw him, but also heard and touched him (see 1 John 1:1–4). God gave this great honor to a woman whose broken life had experienced healing (Luke 8:2). In Jewish culture, this was surprising. A woman could not even be a witness in court. No Jew at that time would make up such a story.Read the comment
