Context of Hebrews 2:7

5We are speaking about the new world that will come. God did not choose angels to rule over that world. 6No! Instead, someone wrote this somewhere in the Bible: ‘Lord God, why do you even think about people? You take care of men and women, even though they seem to be so small. For a short time, you made them less important than the angels But then you made them great and powerful, like kings. 8You caused them to rule over everything.’ It says that God has caused people to rule over everything. That means that there is nothing that people do not have authority over. But at this time, we do not yet see that people rule over everything. 9But we do see Jesus! God made him less important than the angels for a short time. And now God has made him the great and powerful king. God did this because Jesus died as a sacrifice on behalf of all people. His death showed that God is very kind.

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7Thou madest him a little lower than the angels - We must again have recourse to the original from which this quotation is made: מאלהים מעט ותחסרהו vattechasserehu meat meelohim . If this be spoken of man as he came out of the hands of his Maker, it places him at the head of all God's works; for literally translated it is: Thou hast made him less than God. And this is proved by his being made in the image and likeness of God, which is spoken of no other…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7Thou madest him a little lower than the angels - Margin, “A little while inferior to.” The Greek may here mean a little inferior in rank, or inferior for a little time. But the probable meaning is, that it refers to inferiority of rank. Such is its obvious sense in Psalm 8:1-9, from which this is quoted. The meaning is, that God had made man but little inferior to the angels in rank. He was inferior, but still God had exalted him almost to their rank…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-9Verses 5-9 Neither the state in which the church is at present, nor its more completely restored state, when the prince of this world shall be cast out, and the kingdoms of the earth become the kingdom of Christ, is left to the government of the angels: Christ will take to him his great power, and will reign. And what is the moving cause of all the kindness God shows to men in giving Christ for them and to them? it is the grace of God. As a reward of…Read the comment

In other words, Christ became like other humans (see also Philippians 2:5–8). crowned him with glory and honor: Because of his suffering, he was given the highest honor and praise (see Hebrews 2:9; Philippians 2:9–11).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 77. a little--not as Bengel, "a little time." than the angels--Hebrew, "than God," "Elohim," that is, the abstract qualities of God, such as angels possess in an inferior form; namely, heavenly, spiritual, incorporeal natures. Man, in his original creation, was set next beneath them. So the man Jesus, though Lord of angels, when He emptied Himself of the externals of His Divinity (see on Php 2:6, 7), was in His human nature "a little lower than the…Read the comment
