Context of 3 John 1:14
12All the believers say that Demetrius is a good person. He obeys God's true message. That also shows clearly that he is a good person. We also say the same thing about him. You know very well that what we say about him is true. 13I would like to tell you many more things. But I do not want to write them in a letter. Instead, I hope to come and visit you soon. Then I can see you and we can talk together. 15I pray that God will give you peace. All your Christian friends here say ‘hello’ to you. Say ‘hello’ for me to each of my friends there, one by one.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 14Peace be to thee - Mayest thou possess every requisite good, both of a spiritual and temporal kind. Our friends salute thee - Desire to be affectionately remembered to thee. Greet the friends by name - remember me to all those with whom I am acquainted, as if I had specified them by name. This is a proof to me that this epistle was not sent to Corinth, where it is not likely John ever was; and where it is not likely he had any particular acquaintances…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 14But I trust I shall shortly see thee - Notes at 2 John 1:12. Our friends salute thee - That is, your friends and mine. This would seem rather to refer to private friends of John and Gaius than to Christians as such. They had, doubtless, their warm personal friends in both places. Greet the friends by name - That is, each one individually. He remembered them as individuals, but did not deem it proper to specify them. Practical Remarks On 3John (1) It is…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 13-14Verses 13-14 Here is the character of Demetrius. A name in the gospel, or a good report in the churches, is better than worldly honour. Few are well spoken of by all; and sometimes it is ill to be so. Happy those whose spirit and conduct commend them before God and men. We must be ready to bear our testimony to them; and it is well when those who commend, can appeal to the consciences of such as know most of those who are commended. A personal…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 14The English expression face to face is similar in meaning to the Greek expression used here, which means “mouth to mouth” (literally) (see also 2 John 1:12). In Greek, the phrase “mouth to mouth” is an idiom that means close, direct, and personal communication. It pictures two people speaking to each other without anything in between.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1414. face to face--Greek, "mouth to mouth." Peace--peace inward of conscience, peace fraternal of friendship, peace supernal of glory [Lyra]. friends--a title seldom used in the New Testament, as it is absorbed in the higher titles of "brother, brethren." Still Christ recognizes the relation of friend also, based on the highest grounds, obedience to Him from love, and entailing the highest privileges, admission to the intimacy of the holy and glorious God…Read the comment
