Context of 2 Timothy 4:6
4People will refuse to listen to God's true message. Instead, they will want to listen to silly stories that are false. 5But you yourself must continue to think seriously and clearly. Be patient and brave when troubles come. Continue to tell the good news about Christ to people. Do all the work that God has given you to do as his servant. As for me, it is nearly time for me to die. My death will be like a drink offering that they pour out to God. My life as God's servant will end. 7I have worked to serve Christ well. I have finished everything that God wanted me to do. I am like a runner who has run to the end of the race. I have continued to believe God's true message. 8So now a gift is waiting for me. The Lord will make me completely right with him. That will be like a crown which the Lord will give me on that great day when he judges people. He is the judge who is fair and right. He will not only give that gift to me. He will give it to all those people who love him. They will be happy to see him when he comes again.

- Philippians 2:17You believe in Christ, and you are his servants. That is like you are offering yourselves as a sacrifice to God. Perhaps I will soon have to die. Then my blood would be like drink that I am pouring on your sacrifice, to please God. So, if I have to die now, I will be happy. And we should all be happy together.

Commentaries on 2 Timothy 4:6
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6For I am now ready to be offered - · I am already poured out as a libation. See the note on Philemon 2:17. He considers himself as on the eve of being sacrificed, and looks upon his blood as the libation which was poured on the sacrificial offering. He could not have spoken thus positively had not the sentence of death been already passed upon him.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6For I am now ready to be offered - This conviction of the apostle that he was about to die, is urged as a reason why Timothy should be laborious and faithful in the performance of the duties of his office. His own work was nearly done. He was soon to be withdrawn from the earth, and whatever benefit the world might have derived from his experience or active exertions, it was now to be deprived of it. He was about to leave a work which he much loved, and…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-8Verses 6-8 The blood of the martyrs, though not a sacrifice of atonement, yet was a sacrifice of acknowledgment to the grace of God and his truth. Death to a good man, is his release from the imprisonment of this world, and his departure to the enjoyments of another world. As a Christian, and a minister, Paul had kept the faith, kept the doctrines of the gospel. What comfort will it afford, to be able to speak in this manner toward the end of our days!…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6being poured like a drink offering: Paul regards his death as a sacrifice to God (see Exodus 29:40–41; Leviticus 23:13; Numbers 28:7; Philippians 2:17). This offering participates in Christ’s own sacrifice (see Colossians 1:24; see also Romans 12:1).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 66. Greek, "For I am already being offered"; literally, as a libation; appropriate to the shedding of his blood. Every sacrifice began with an initiatory libation on the victim's head (compare Note, see on Php 2:17). A motive to stimulate Timothy to faithfulness--the departure and final blessedness of Paul; it is the end that crowns the work [Bengel]. As the time of his departure was indicated to Peter, so to Paul (2Pe 1:14). my departure--literally…Read the comment
