Context of 1 Peter 2:5
3Do this, because you have already begun to know how kind the Lord is to you. 4So come to the Lord Jesus. He is like a big stone that a builder uses to build a house. But he is alive. People decided that he was not important. So they refused him. But God had chosen him. To God, Jesus is very valuable. You yourselves are also like stones that are alive. God is using you, like stones, to build a house where his Spirit lives. You will serve him like his special priests who offer sacrifices to him. God will be happy with the spiritual offerings that you give to him, because you belong to Jesus Christ. 6In the Bible, God says this: ‘Look, I have chosen a stone that is very valuable. I have chosen this stone as the most important stone, for the corner of my house in Zion. Anyone who believes in him will never be disappointed.’ 7This stone is very valuable to you who believe in Jesus. But the Bible says this about people who do not believe in him: ‘The builders refused to use a certain stone. They thought that it had no value. But now that stone has become the most important stone at the corner of the building.’

Commentaries on 1 Peter 2:5
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 5Ye also, as lively stones - · Living stones; each being instinct with the principle of life, which proceeds from him who is the foundation, called above , a living stone. The metaphor in this and the following verse is as bold as it is singular; and commentators and critics have found it difficult to hit on any principle of explanation. In all metaphors there is something in the natural image that is illustrative of some chief moral property in the thing…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5Ye also, as lively stones - Greek, “living stones.” The word should have been so rendered. The word lively with us now has a different meaning from living, and denotes “active, quick, sprightly.” The Greek word is the same as that used in the previous verse, and rendered living. The meaning is, that the materials of which the temple here referred to was composed, were living materials throughout. The foundation is a living foundation, and all the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5God's people form the spiritual house or temple where God lives (1 Corinthians 3:16). Jesus compared his body to a "temple" (John 2:19–22). The church is called "the body of Christ" (Ephesians 4:12). God no longer reveals himself in one place but in and among the people who belong to him and praise his goodness (see 1 Peter 2:10). As God’s holy priests in the new covenant, Christians offer not animal sacrifices but spiritual sacrifices such as praising…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 55. Ye also, as lively stones--partaking of the name and life which is in "THE Living Stone" (1Pe 2:4; 1Co 3:11). Many names which belong to Christ in the singular are assigned to Christians in the plural. He is "THE Son," "High Priest," "King," "Lamb"; they, "sons," "priests," "kings," "sheep," "lambs." So the Shulamite called from Solomon [Bengel]. are built up--Greek, "are being built up," as in Ep 2:22. Not as Alford, "Be ye built up." Peter grounds…Read the comment
