Context of Revelation 14:13
11And the smoke of their torment goes up to ages of ages, and they have no respite day and night who do homage to the beast and to its image, and if any one receive the mark of its name. 12Here is the endurance of the saints, who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. And I heard a voice out of the heaven saying, Write, Blessed the dead who die in [the] Lord from henceforth. Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; for their works follow with them. 14And I saw, and behold, a white cloud, and on the cloud one sitting like [the] Son of man, having upon his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle. 15And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Send thy sickle and reap; for the hour of reaping is come, for the harvest of the earth is dried.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13I heard a voice from heaven - As the information now to be given was of the utmost importance, it is solemnly communicated by a voice from heaven; and the apostle is commanded to write or record what is said. Blessed are the dead - Happy are they. They are happy in two respects: They do not see the evil that shall come upon the world, and are exempted from any farther sufferings. They actually and conscientiously enjoy happiness in a state of blessedness…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13And I heard a voice from heaven - A voice that seemed to speak from heaven. Saying unto me, Write - Make a record of this truth. We may suppose that John was engaged in making a record of what he saw in vision; he was now instructed to make a record of what he heard. This passage may be referred to as a proof that he wrote this book while in Patmos, or as the heavenly disclosures were made to him, and not afterward from memory. Blessed are the dead - That…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-13Verses 6-13 The progress of the Reformation appears to be here set forth. The four proclamations are plain in their meaning; that all Christians may be encouraged, in the time of trial, to be faithful to their Lord. The gospel is the great means whereby men are brought to fear God, and to give glory to him. The preaching of the everlasting gospel shakes the foundations of antichrist in the world, and hastens its downfal. If any persist in being subject to…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 13A powerful voice from heaven tells John to write again (see Revelation 1:11, 19; 21:5; compare 10:4). Blessed are … those who die in the Lord: God wants those who suffer persecution to be with him and enjoy his blessings and rest. Mentioning hard work and good deeds with eternal reward hints at rewards given based on actions (Revelation 20:12).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1313. Encouragement to cheer those persecuted under the beast. Write--to put it on record for ever. Blessed--in resting from their toils, and, in the case of the saints just before alluded to as persecuted by the beast, in resting from persecutions. Their full blessedness is now "from henceforth," that is, FROM THIS TIME, when the judgment on the beast and the harvest gatherings of the elect are imminent. The time so earnestly longed for by former martyrs…Read the comment
