Context of Mark 8:31
29And he asked them, But ye, who do ye say that I am? And Peter answering says to him, Thou art the Christ. 30And he charged them straitly, in order that they should tell no man about him. And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and of the chief priests and of the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise [again]. 32And he spoke the thing openly. And Peter, taking him to [him], began to rebuke him. 33But he, turning round and seeing his disciples, rebuked Peter, saying, Get away behind me, Satan, for thy mind is not on the things that are of God, but on the things that are of men.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 27-33Verses 27-33 These things are written, that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. These miracles of our Lord assure us that he was not conquered, but a Conqueror. Now the disciples are convinced that Jesus is the Christ; they may bear to hear of his sufferings, of which Christ here begins to give them notice. He sees that amiss in what we say and do, of which we ourselves are not aware, and knows what manner of spirit we are of, when we…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 31God thought it necessary for Jesus to suffer (see also 9:11; 13:7, 10). The elders, leading priests, and teachers of religious law caused his suffering.
