Context of Mark 1:5
3Voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of [the] Lord, make his paths straight. 4There came John baptising in the wilderness, and preaching [the] baptism of repentance for remission of sins. And there went out to him all the district of Judaea, and all they of Jerusalem, and were baptised by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6And John was clothed in camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins, and ate locusts and wild honey. 7And he preached, saying, There comes he that is mightier than I after me, the thong of whose sandals I am not fit to stoop down and unloose.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5All of … Judea: John the Baptist attracted a lot of attention. Many people believed that there had been no prophet for over 400 years. So, prophets were associated with Israel's past and the future reign of the Messiah. John preached repentance (turning away from sin and returning to God), like the ancient prophets. He also dressed like the great prophet Elijah (1:6), whom God promised would return in the last days (Malachi 4:5).Read the comment
