Context of 2 Thessalonians 3:6
4But we trust in the Lord as to you, that the things which we enjoin, ye both do and will do. 5But the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patience of the Christ. Now we enjoin you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw from every brother walking disorderly and not according to the instruction which he received from us. 7For ye know yourselves how ye ought to imitate us, because we have not walked disorderly among you; 8nor have we eaten bread from any one without cost; but in toil and hardship working night and day not to be chargeable to any one of you:

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6That ye withdraw yourselves - Have no fellowship with those who will not submit to proper discipline; who do not keep their place; , such as are out of their rank, and act according to their own wills and caprices; and particularly such as are idle and busybodies. These he had ordered, 1 Thessalonians 4:11, 1 Thessalonians 4:12, that they should study to be quiet, mind their own business, and work with their hands; but it appears that they had paid no…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6Now we command you, brethren - The apostle now 2 Thessalonians 3:6-12 turns to an important subject - the proper method of treating those who were idle and disorderly in the church. In the previous Epistle he had adverted to this subject, but in the mild language of exhortation. When he wrote that Epistle he was aware that there were some among them who were disposed to be idle, and he had tenderly exhorted them “to be quiet, and to mind their own…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-15Verses 6-15 Those who have received the gospel, are to live according to the gospel. Such as could work, and would not, were not to be maintained in idleness. Christianity is not to countenance slothfulness, which would consume what is meant to encourage the industrious, and to support the sick and afflicted. Industry in our callings as men, is a duty required by our calling as Christians. But some expected to be maintained in idleness, and indulged a…Read the comment

Church members should avoid Christians who are lazy (see 2 Thessalonians 3:7, 11–13; 1 Thessalonians 5:14). Staying away from undisciplined people would strongly impact them (Matthew 18:17; Romans 16:17; 1 Corinthians 5:9–13). This would promote shame and repentance (2 Thessalonians 3:14), but it would stop short of removal from the church (3:15).Read the comment

Some had given up labor as though the Lord's day was immediately coming.
