Those who believed in Jesus were going to receive the Spirit, for the Spirit had not yet been given because Jesus had not yet been glorified. 40When some from the crowd heard these words, they said, “This truly is the Prophet.” 41Others said, “This is the Messiah.” But some said, “Surely the Messiah doesn’t come from Galilee, does he?

The word seems necessary to the completion of the sense. - Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 37-39Verses 37-39 On the last day of the feast of tabernacles, the Jews drew water and poured it out before the Lord. It is supposed that Christ alluded to this. If any man desires to be truly and for ever happy, let him apply to Christ, and be ruled by him. This thirst means strong desires after spiritual blessings, which nothing else can satisfy; so the sanctifying and comforting influences of the Holy Spirit, were intended by the waters which Jesus called…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 39In the death and resurrection of Jesus, his life was given for others, and the Holy Spirit was given to believers. When Jesus was crucified, blood and water flowed from his side (see 19:34). This event points to the gift of life that comes through his death. After he rose from the dead, he breathed on his disciples and gave them the Holy Spirit (20:22). In this way, his life and the Spirit were poured out for his followers.Read the comment
