Context of Acts 8:22
20But Peter told him, “May your silver be destroyed with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! 21You have no part or share in this matter, because your heart is not right before God. Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, if possible, your heart’s intent may be forgiven. 23For I see you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by wickedness.” 24“Pray to the Lord for me,” Simon replied, “so that nothing you have said may happen to me.”

Commentaries on Acts 8:22
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 22Repent therefore of this thy wickedness - St. Peter did not suppose his case to be utterly hopeless; though his sin, considered in its motives and objects, was of the most heinous kind. If perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee - His sin, as yet, only existed in thought and purpose; and therefore it is said, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 22Repent, therefore - Here we may remark: (1)That Simon was at this time an unconverted sinner. (2)that the command was given to him “as such.” (3)that he was required to “do the thing”; not to wait or seek merely, but actually to repent. (4)that this was to be the “first step” in his conversion. He was not even directed to “pray” first, but his first indispensable work was to “repent”; that is, to exercise proper sorrow for this sin, and to “abandon” his…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-25Verses 14-25 The Holy Ghost was as yet fallen upon none of these coverts, in the extraordinary powers conveyed by the descent of the Spirit upon the day of Pentecost. We may take encouragement from this example, in praying to God to give the renewing graces of the Holy Ghost to all for whose spiritual welfare we are concerned; for that includes all blessings. No man can give the Holy Spirit by the laying on of his hands; but we should use our best…Read the comment
