Context of Mark 15:2

1Early in the morning, the chief priests, elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin devised a plan. They bound Jesus, led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate. So Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied. 3And the chief priests began to accuse Him of many things. 4Then Pilate questioned Him again, “Have You no answer? Look how many charges they are bringing against You!”

Commentaries on Mark 15:2

• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 2The phrase King of the Jews is similar to the Jewish title "King of Israel" in 15:32. You have said so: The response Jesus gives to Pilate's question appears in all four Gospels. Jesus clearly understood himself to be a king (10:37–38; 11:9–10; 12:35–37). Pilate eventually crucified him for this reason (15:26). But Pilate knew Jesus was not a political threat (John 18:33–39).Read the comment
