Commentaries on John 17:1
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 1These words spake Jesus - That is, what is related in the preceding chapters. We may consider our Lord as still moving on towards Gethsemane, not having yet passed the brook Cedron, John 18:1. Our Lord, who was now going to act as high priest for the whole human race, imitates in his conduct that of the Jewish high priest on the great day of expiation; who, in order to offer up the grand atonement for the sins of the people: - Washed himself, and put on…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 1These words - The words addressed to them in the preceding chapters. They were proceeding to the garden of Gethsemane. It adds much to the interest of this prayer that it was offered in the stillness of the night, in the open air, and in the especially tender circumstances in which Jesus and his apostles were. It is the longest prayer recorded in the New Testament. It was offered on the most tender and solemn occasion that has ever occurred in our world…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 1Christ's prayer for himself. (1-5) His prayer for his disciples. (6-10) His prayer. (11-26) Verses 1-5 Our Lord prayed as a man, and as the Mediator of his people; yet he spoke with majesty and authority, as one with and equal to the Father. Eternal life could not be given to believers, unless Christ, their Surety, both glorified the Father, and was glorified of him. This is the sinner's way to eternal life, and when this knowledge shall be made perfect…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 1Jesus looked up to heaven. This was the traditional Jewish way to pray (11:41; Psalm 123:1). He probably also raised his hands (Exodus 9:33; 17:11; Psalm 28:2). Jesus said prayers like this out loud so his followers could hear them (John 11:41–42; 12:27–30; also Matthew 11:25–30; Luke 10:21–22). Father was the usual way Jesus addressed God, which he did six times in this prayer (see also John 11:41; 12:27). This title, uncommon in the Jewish faith, showed…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 1-26(See on Joh 14:1). Had this prayer not been recorded, what reverential reader would not have exclaimed, Oh, to have been within hearing of such a prayer as that must have been, which wound up the whole of His past ministry and formed the point of transition to the dark scenes which immediately followed! But here it is, and with such signature of the Lips that uttered it that we seem rather to hear it from Himself than read it from the pen of His faithful…Read the comment
