Context of John 15:19
17This is My command to you: Love one another. 18If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me first. If you were of the world, it would love you as its own. Instead, the world hates you, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. 20Remember the word that I spoke to you: ‘No servant is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you as well; if they kept My word, they will keep yours as well. 21But they will treat you like this because of My name, since they do not know the One who sent Me.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 18-25Verses 18-25 How little do many persons think, that in opposing the doctrine of Christ as our Prophet, Priest, and King, they prove themselves ignorant of the one living and true God, whom they profess to worship! The name into which Christ's disciples were baptized, is that which they will live and die by. It is a comfort to the greatest sufferers, if they suffer for Christ's name's sake. They must show love and obedience and experience opposition from those against their message (15:20–21; see 9:1–41; 11:16). Darkness opposes light (1:5). The followers of Jesus carry that light in the world (1 John 1:7; 2:9). They should expect the world to hate them in the way it hated Jesus (see John 17:14). The disciples of Jesus share his separation from and conflict with the world.Read the comment
