Context of Acts 13:25
23From the descendants of this man, God has brought to Israel the Savior Jesus, as He promised. 24Before the arrival of Jesus, John preached a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. As John was completing his course, he said, ‘Who do you suppose I am? I am not that One. But there is One coming after me whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.’ 26Brothers, children of Abraham, and you Gentiles who fear God, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent. 27The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning Him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath.

Commentaries on Acts 13:25
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 25As John fulfilled his course - As John was fulfilling his race, he said, etc. It has been supposed that the word , course, or race, is used here to point out the short duration of the Baptist's ministry, and the fervent zeal with which he performed it. It signifies properly his ministry, or life. A man's work, employment, function, etc., is his race, course, or way of life. John had a ministry from God; and he discharged the duties of it with zeal and…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 25And as John fulfilled his course - As he was engaged in completing his work. His ministry is called a course or race, that which was to be run, or completed. He said - These are not the precise words which the evangelists have recorded, but the sense is the same. See the John 1:20 note; Matthew 3:11 note.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-31Verses 14-31 When we come together to worship God, we must do it, not only by prayer and praise, but by the reading and hearing of the word of God. The bare reading of the Scriptures in public assemblies is not enough; they should be expounded, and the people exhorted out of them. This is helping people in doing that which is necessary to make the word profitable, to apply it to themselves. Every thing is touched upon in this sermon, which might best…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 23-25At this point, Paul shifted to the main point of his message. Jesus, descended from King David's family line, was the Savior God promised to Israel. John the Baptist prepared the way for the Messiah (God's chosen leader). John called Israel to repent and be baptized. John was a humble servant who prepared the way for the one whose coming he announced.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 23-2523-25. Of this man's seed hath God, according to ... promise, raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus--The emphasis on this statement lies: (1) in the seed from which Christ sprang--David's--and the promise to that effect, which was thus fulfilled; (2) on the character in which this promised Christ was given of God--"a Saviour." His personal name "Jesus" is emphatically added, as designed to express that very character. (See on Mt 1:21).Read the comment
