Context of Revelation 14:18
16So He who was sitting on the cloud cast His sickle over the earth, and the earth was reaped (judged). 17Then another angel came out of the temple (sanctuary) in heaven, and he also had a sharp sickle. And another angel came from the altar, the one who has power over fire; and he called with a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, “Put in your sharp sickle and reap the clusters of grapes from the vine of the earth, because her grapes are ripe [for judgment].” 19So the angel swung his sickle to the earth and harvested the grapevine of the earth, and threw the grapes into the great wine press of the wrath and indignation of God [as judgment of the rebellious world]. 20And the grapes in the wine press were trampled and crushed outside the city, and blood poured from the wine press, reaching up to the horses’ bridles, for a distance of sixteen hundred stadia.

Commentaries on Revelation 14:18
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 18Power over fire - Probably meaning the same angel which is mentioned, Revelation 8:3; Revelation 9:13, who stood by the altar of burnt-offering, having authority over its fire to offer that incense to God which represents the prayers of the saints.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 18And another angel - The sixth in order. He came, like the angel in Revelation 14:15, with a command to him who had the sickle to go forth and execute his commission. Came out from the altar - This stood in the front of the temple (see the notes on Matthew 21:12; compare the notes on Matthew 5:23-24), and was the place where burnt-sacrifices were made. As the work now to be done was a work of destruction, this was an appropriate place in the…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 14-20Verses 14-20 Warnings and judgments not having produced reformation, the sins of the nations are filled up, and they become ripe for judgments, represented by a harvest, an emblem which is used to signify the gathering of the righteous, when ripe for heaven, by the mercy of God. The harvest time is when the corn is ripe; when the believers are ripe for heaven, then the wheat of the earth shall be gathered into Christ's garner. And by a vintage. The…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18-20The ripe grapes (see Amos 8:2) trampled in the winepress highlight God's power to judge (see Revelation 19:15; Joel 3:13). People built winepresses outside cities and towns; here, the city is Jerusalem. The bloody river of death stretched about 290 kilometers (180 miles). This shows that God’s enemies have no chance when the Son of Man comes in judgment. This destruction is closely linked with the final battle in Revelation 19:17–21. God is just and fair…Read the comment
