Context of Psalms 80:15
13A boar from the woods eats it away, And the insects of the field feed on it. 14Turn again [in favor to us], O God of hosts; Look down from heaven and see, and take care of this vine, Even the stock which Your right hand has planted, And [look down on] the son that You have reared and strengthened for Yourself. 16It is burned with fire, it is cut down; They perish at the rebuke of Your [angry] appearance. 17Let Your hand be upon the man of Your right hand, Upon the son of man whom You have made strong for Yourself.

And the branch - thou madest strong for thy self - The original בן ועל veal ben, "and upon the Son whom thou hast strengthened for thyself." Many have thought that the Lord Jesus is meant. - Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 15And the vineyard - Gesenius renders this as a verb: “Protect;” that is, “Protect or defend what thy right hand hath planted.” So the Septuagint renders it ́ katartisai - and the Vulgate, perfice, fit, prepare, order. Prof. Alexander renders it sustain. DeWette, “Guard what thy right hand hath planted.” This is doubtless the true idea. It is a prayer that God would guard, sustain, defend what he had planted; to wit, the vine which he had brought out of…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 8-16Verses 8-16 The church is represented as a vine and a vineyard. The root of this vine is Christ, the branches are believers. And are not we planted as in a well-cultivated garden, with every means of being fruitful in works of righteousness?
