MR No. 1231—The Vineyard

16MR 331.1

These are the fruits that Christ would have from His vineyards, and from His saints who assemble to worship Him from year to year. Obedience to God’s commandments makes our souls precious in His sight. The church is very dear to the heart of God. He would have His people sing with the heart and with the understanding also: “Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt: thou hast cast out the heathen, and planted it.” “Now will I sing to my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill: And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein.... The vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel” [Psalm 80:8; Isaiah 5:1, 2, 7].

The Great Controversy

Chapter 1—The Destruction of Jerusalem

GC 19.2

The Son of God Himself was sent to plead with the impenitent city. It was Christ that had brought Israel as a goodly vine out of Egypt. Psalm 80:8. His own hand had cast out the heathen before it. He had planted it “in a very fruitful hill.” His guardian care had hedged it about. His servants had been sent to nurture it. “What could have been done more to My vineyard,” He exclaims, “that I have not done in it?” Isaiah 5:1-4. Though when He looked that it should bring forth grapes, it brought forth wild grapes, yet with a still yearning hope of fruitfulness He came in person to His vineyard, if haply it might be saved from destruction. He digged about His vine; He pruned and cherished it. He was unwearied in His efforts to save this vine of His own planting.

Chapter 1—Destruction of Jerusalem

GC88 20.1

The Son of God himself was sent to plead with the impenitent city. It was Christ that had brought Israel as a goodly vine out of Egypt. [Psalm 80:8.] His own hand had cast out the heathen before it. He had planted it “in a very fruitful hill.” [Isaiah 5:1-4.] His guardian care had hedged it about. His servants had been sent to nurture it. “What could have been done more to my vineyard,” he exclaims, “that I have not done in it?” [Isaiah 5:1-4.] Though when he “looked that it should bring forth grapes, it brought forth wild grapes,” [Isaiah 5:1-4.] yet with a still yearning hope of fruitfulness he came in person to his vineyard, if haply it might be saved from destruction. He digged about his vine; he pruned and cherished it. He was unwearied in his efforts to save this vine of his own planting.

It is of the church that the Psalmist writes, “Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt; thou hast cast out the heathen, and planted it. Thou preparedst room before it, and didst cause it to take deep root.” [Psalm 80:8, 9.] And through the prophet Isaiah God declares, “Now will I sing to my well-beloved a song of my beloved, touching his vineyard. My well-beloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill; and he fenced it (with his commandments), and gathered out the stones thereof, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein.” [Isaiah 5:1, 2.]

The Lord favored His chosen people with prosperity. The psalmist says, “Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt: thou hast cast out the heathen and planted it. Thou preparedst room before it, and didst cause it to take deep root, and it filled the land. The hills were covered with the shadow of it, and the boughs thereof were like the goodly cedars. She sent out her boughs unto the sea, and her branches unto the river.” [Psalm 80:8-11.] God declared this people to be a holy people unto Himself, and He promised that if they would keep their covenant with Him, he would supply them with every necessity for their happiness.

Meetings after meetings have been appointed for prayer—the so-called Week of Prayer. There is a desire with many for the revealing of God, and there are many who in true penitence seek the Lord that they may by precept and example keep a high and holy ideal ever before the minds and consciences of the people. The prayer goes forth from unfeigned lips, “Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?” Psalm 85:6. “Return, we beseech thee, Oh God of hosts: look down from heaven, and behold, and visit this vine.” Psalm 80:14.

We want you to return to the Lord. “Return, we beseech thee, O Lord of hosts: look down from heaven, and behold, and visit this vine; and the vineyard which thy right hand hath planted, and the branch that thou madest strong for thyself. It is burned with fire; it is cut down: they perish at the rebuke of thy countenance. Let thy hand be upon the man of thy right hand, upon the son of man whom thou madest strong for thyself. So will we not go back from thee; quicken us, and we will call upon thy name. Turn us again, O Lord God of hosts, cause thy face to shine, and we shall be saved.” [Psalm 80:14-19.] I hope and pray that the words of this Psalm may be the language of your hearts. We have a merciful God. “The Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.” [Psalm 84:11.]

Lay before the Father the promise given us to present: “Whatsoever ye shall ask in My name, I will give it you.” [John 14:13.] Plead now, just at this time, “Let Thine hand be upon the Man of Thy right hand, upon the Son of man whom Thou hast made strong for Thyself. [Psalm 80:17.] For His name’s sake hear us, pity us, strengthen us. We will not boast, but glory in our infirmities, if Thy power, O Christ, will rest upon us.”
