Context of Mark 13:7
5Jesus began to say to them, “Be careful and see to it that no one misleads you. 6Many will come in My name [misusing My name or claiming to be the Messiah], saying, ‘I am He!’ and will deceive and mislead many. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed (frightened, troubled); these things must take place, but the end is not yet. 8For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These things are the beginning of the birth pangs [the intolerable anguish and suffering]. 9“But be on your guard; they will turn you over to courts, and you will be beaten in synagogues, and you will stand [as accused] before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 5-13Verses 5-13 Our Lord Jesus, in reply to the disciples' question, does not so much satisfy their curiosity as direct their consciences. When many are deceived, we should thereby be awakened to look to ourselves. And the disciples of Christ, if it be not their own fault, may enjoy holy security and peace of mind, when all around is in disorder. But they must take heed that they are not drawn away from Christ and their duty to him, by the sufferings they…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7The Greek word translated must is also used in 8:31. In both places, the word emphasizes God’s control and authority over events. but the end is still to come: These events would happen before Jerusalem’s destruction. Jesus compared them to birth pains, which come before childbirth. In the same way, these troubles would come before God’s judgment on Jerusalem. However, they did not mean that the destruction would happen at once.Read the comment
