Context of John 7:36
34You will look for Me, and will not [be able to] find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.” 35Then the Jews said among themselves, “Where does this Man intend to go that we will not find Him? Does He intend to go to the Dispersion [of Jews scattered and living] among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks? What does this statement of His mean, ‘You will look for Me, and will not [be able to] find Me; and where I am, you cannot come’?” 37Now on the last and most important day of the feast, Jesus stood and called out [in a loud voice], “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink! 38He who believes in Me [who adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Me], as the Scripture has said, ‘From his innermost being will flow continually rivers of living water.’ ”

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 31-36Verses 31-36 The discourses of Jesus convinced many that he was the Messiah; but they had not courage to own it. It is comfort to those who are in the world, but not of it, and therefore are hated by it and weary of it, that they shall not be in it always, that they shall not be in it long. Our days being evil, it is well they are few. The days of life and of grace do not last long; and sinners, when in misery, will be glad of the help they now despise…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 32-36Jesus announced his return to the one who sent him, the Father in heaven (17:1–7). But the Pharisees misunderstood him. After Jesus returned to the Father, the Jewish leaders would no longer be able to find him. and where I am, you cannot come: These Pharisees, still in spiritual darkness, could not enter heaven. So Jesus would…Read the comment
