Context of John 7:13
11So the Jews kept looking for Him at the feast and asking, “Where is He?” 12There was a lot of whispered discussion and murmuring among the crowds about Him. Some were saying, “He is a good man”; others said, “No, on the contrary, He misleads the people [giving them false ideas].” Yet no one was speaking out openly and freely about Him for fear of [the leaders of] the Jews. 14When the feast was already half over, Jesus went up into the temple [court] and began to teach. 15Then the Jews were perplexed. They said, “How did this man become learned [so versed in the Scriptures and theology] without formal training?”

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 13Spake openly of him - The word translated “openly,” here, is commonly rendered “boldly.” This refers doubtless, to those who really believed on him. His enemies were not silent; but his friends had not confidence to speak of him openly or boldly that is, to speak what they really thought. Many supposed that he was the Messiah, yet even this they did not dare to profess. All that they could say in his favor was that he was a good man. There are always many…Read the comment
