Context of John 6:32
30So they said to Him, “What sign (attesting miracle) will You do that we may see it and believe You? What [supernatural] work will You do [as proof]? 31Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written [in Scripture], ‘He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.’ ” Then Jesus said to them, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. 33For the Bread of God is He who comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.” 34Then they said to Him, “Lord, always give us this bread.”

Commentaries on John 6:32
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 32Moses gave you not that bread from heaven - Our Lord refutes the argument of the Jews, by proving: That it was not Moses, but God, who gave the manna. That this bread was not the true bread, but was merely a type of it. That God had given them now a bread infinitely more excellent. That himself is that heavenly nourishment of which he spake, and who was typified by the manna in the desert. To show that himself was the true bread from heaven, he proves two…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 32Moses gave you not that bread from heaven - This might be translated, “Moses gave you not the bread of heaven.” The word “that,” which makes some difference in the sense, is not necessary to express the meaning of the original. It does not appear that Jesus intended to call in question the fact that their fathers were fed by the instrumentality of Moses, but to state that he did not give them the true bread that was adapted to the wants of the soul. He…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 28-35Verses 28-35 Constant exercise of faith in Christ, is the most important and difficult part of the obedience required from us, as sinners seeking salvation. When by his grace we are enabled to live a life of faith in the Son of God, holy tempers follow, and acceptable services may be done. God, even his Father, who gave their fathers that food from heaven to support their natural lives, now gave them the true Bread for the salvation of their souls. Coming…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 32-33Jesus corrected the people's argument: God, not Moses, fed Israel in the wilderness. The most important goal in life is to seek the true bread from God. This bread is not ordinary food. It is the gift that gives eternal life. To “eat” this bread means to believe in Jesus and depend on him. Those who receive this bread share in the life that comes from God and lasts forever.Read the comment
