Context of John 11:27
25Jesus said to her, “I am the Resurrection and the Life. Whoever believes in (adheres to, trusts in, relies on) Me [as Savior] will live even if he dies; 26and everyone who lives and believes in Me [as Savior] will never die. Do you believe this?” She said to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have believed and continue to believe that You are the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed), the Son of God, He who was [destined and promised] to come into the world [and it is for You that the world has waited].” 28After she had said this, she left and called her sister Mary, privately whispering [to her], “The Teacher is here and is asking for you.” 29And when she heard this, she got up quickly and went to Him.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 27Yea, Lord: I believe - Ϛ, I have believed. Either meaning that she had believed this for some time past, or that, since he began to teach her, her faith had been considerable increased; but verbs preter, in Greek, are often used to signify the present. Martha here acknowledges Christ for the Messiah promised to their fathers; but her faith goes no farther; and, having received some hope of her brother's present resurrection, she waited for no farther…Read the comment

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 17-32Verses 17-32 Here was a house where the fear of God was, and on which his blessing rested; yet it was made a house of mourning. Grace will keep sorrow from the heart, but not from the house. When God, by his grace and providence, is coming towards us in ways of mercy and comfort, we should, like Martha, go forth by faith, hope, and prayer, to meet him. When Martha went to meet Jesus, Mary sat still in the house; this temper formerly had been an advantage…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 26-27Do you believe this?: Jesus was not simply asking Martha if he could bring Lazarus out of the grave. Martha already believed that Lazarus would rise again on the last day. Instead, Jesus asked a deeper question. Did Martha believe that life itself is connected to him? “Yes, Lord”: Even though she did not fully understand, she acknowledged that Jesus was the Christ, God's chosen one. But she was still surprised by his power.Read the comment
