Context of 2 Timothy 4:6
4and will turn their ears away from the truth and will wander off into myths and man-made fictions [and will accept the unacceptable]. 5But as for you, be clear-headed in every situation [stay calm and cool and steady], endure every hardship [without flinching], do the work of an evangelist, fulfill [the duties of] your ministry. For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure [from this world] is at hand and I will soon go free. 7I have fought the good and worthy and noble fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith [firmly guarding the gospel against error]. 8In the future there is reserved for me the [victor’s] crown of righteousness [for being right with God and doing right], which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that [great] day—and not to me only, but also to all those who have loved and longed for and welcomed His appearing.

Commentaries on 2 Timothy 4:6
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 6For I am now ready to be offered - · I am already poured out as a libation. See the note on Philemon 2:17. He considers himself as on the eve of being sacrificed, and looks upon his blood as the libation which was poured on the sacrificial offering. He could not have spoken thus positively had not the sentence of death been already passed upon him.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 6For I am now ready to be offered - This conviction of the apostle that he was about to die, is urged as a reason why Timothy should be laborious and faithful in the performance of the duties of his office. His own work was nearly done. He was soon to be withdrawn from the earth, and whatever benefit the world might have derived from his experience or active exertions, it was now to be deprived of it. He was about to leave a work which he much loved, and…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 6-8Verses 6-8 The blood of the martyrs, though not a sacrifice of atonement, yet was a sacrifice of acknowledgment to the grace of God and his truth. Death to a good man, is his release from the imprisonment of this world, and his departure to the enjoyments of another world. As a Christian, and a minister, Paul had kept the faith, kept the doctrines of the gospel. What comfort will it afford, to be able to speak in this manner toward the end of our days!…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 6being poured like a drink offering: Paul regards his death as a sacrifice to God (see Exodus 29:40–41; Leviticus 23:13; Numbers 28:7; Philippians 2:17). This offering participates in Christ’s own sacrifice (see Colossians 1:24; see also Romans 12:1).Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 66. Greek, "For I am already being offered"; literally, as a libation; appropriate to the shedding of his blood. Every sacrifice began with an initiatory libation on the victim's head (compare Note, see on Php 2:17). A motive to stimulate Timothy to faithfulness--the departure and final blessedness of Paul; it is the end that crowns the work [Bengel]. As the time of his departure was indicated to Peter, so to Paul (2Pe 1:14). my departure--literally…Read the comment
