Context of Luke 8:19

17For nothing is hidden that will not become evident, nor secret that shall not be known and come into open view. 18So pay attention how you listen. For whoever has, to him more will be given. And whoever does not have, even what he supposes he has will be taken away from him.” Yeshua’s mother and brothers came to Him, but were not able to reach Him through the crowd. 20Now it was reported to Him, “Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see You.” 21But answering, He said to them, “My mother and My brothers are these who are hearing the word of God and doing it.”

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 4-21Verses 4-21 There are many very needful and excellent rules and cautions for hearing the word, in the parable of the sower, and the application of it. Happy are we, and for ever indebted to free grace, if the same thing that is a parable to others, with which they are only amused, is a plain truth to us, by which we are taught and governed. We ought to take heed of the things that will hinder our profiting by the word we hear; to take heed lest we hear…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19-20Jesus had four brothers: James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon. The Gospels also mention sisters, but not how many Jesus had (Matthew 13:55; Mark 6:3). These children were probably born to Joseph and Mary after the virgin birth of Jesus. However, some Christians believe that Mary remained a virgin throughout her life. According to this view, Joseph was a widower who already had children from an earlier marriage when he married Mary.Read the comment
