Context of Luke 8:19

17For all that is secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all. 18“So pay attention to how you hear. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what they think they understand will be taken away from them.” Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they couldn’t get to him because of the crowd. 20Someone told Jesus, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, and they want to see you.” 21Jesus replied, “My mother and my brothers are all those who hear God’s word and obey it.”

• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 4-21Verses 4-21 There are many very needful and excellent rules and cautions for hearing the word, in the parable of the sower, and the application of it. Happy are we, and for ever indebted to free grace, if the same thing that is a parable to others, with which they are only amused, is a plain truth to us, by which we are taught and governed. We ought to take heed of the things that will hinder our profiting by the word we hear; to take heed lest we hear…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 19-20Jesus had four brothers: James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon. The Gospels also mention sisters, but not how many Jesus had (Matthew 13:55; Mark 6:3). These children were probably born to Joseph and Mary after the virgin birth of Jesus. However, some Christians believe that Mary remained a virgin throughout her life. According to this view, Joseph was a widower who already had children from an earlier marriage when he married Mary.Read the comment
