Context of Luke 7:18
16Fear took hold of them all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has appeared among us, and God has visited His people.” 17This report concerning Him spread throughout all Judea and the surrounding region. John’s disciples reported to him about all these things. Calling two of his disciples, 19John sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you the One who is to come, or should we look for another?” 20When they appeared before Him, the men said, “John the Immerser sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you the One who is to come, or shall we look for another?’”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 18The disciples of John showed him, etc. - It is very likely that John's disciples attended the ministry of our Lord at particular times; and this, we may suppose, was a common case among the disciples of different Jewish teachers. Though bigotry existed in its most formidable shape between the Jews and Samaritans, yet we do not find that it had any place between Jews and Jews, though they were of different sects, and attached to different teachers.Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 11-18Verses 11-18 When the Lord saw the poor widow following her son to the grave, he had compassion on her. See Christ's power over death itself. The gospel call to all people, to young people particularly, is, Arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light and life. When Christ put life into him, it appeared by the youth's sitting up. Have we grace from Christ? Let us show it. He began to speak: whenever Christ gives us spiritual life, he opens the…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 18-23John’s disciples: See study note on 5:33. John was now in prison (3:19–20). He wondered if Jesus was truly the Christ since Jesus did not act like a powerful political king who would defeat the Romans. In response, Jesus defined his role as God's chosen king.Read the comment
