Context of John 1:49
47Yeshua saw Nathanael coming toward Him. He said, “Look, a true Israelite! There’s nothing false in him.” 48Nathanael said to Him, “How do you know me?” Yeshua answered, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” “Rabbi,” Nathanael answered, “You are Ben-Elohim! You are the King of Israel!” 50“Because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree, you believe?” Yeshua replied to him. “You will see greater things than that!” 51And He said, “Amen, amen I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God going up and coming down on the Son of Man!”

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 49Rabbi - That is, Teacher! and so this word should be translated. Thou art the Son of God - The promised Messiah. Thou art the King of Israel - The real descendant of David, who art to sit on that spiritual throne of which the throne of David was the type.Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 49Rabbi - Master. Applied appropriately to Jesus, and to no one else, Matthew 23:10. The Son of God - By this title he doubtless meant that he was the Messiah. His conscience told him that he had judged right of his character, and that therefore he must know the heart and the desires of the mind. If so, he could not be a mere man, but must be the long-expected Messiah. The King of Israel - This was one of the titles by which the Messiah was expected, and…Read the comment
- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 43-51Verses 43-51 See the nature of true Christianity, it is following Jesus; devoting ourselves to him, and treading in his steps. Observe the objection Nathanael made. All who desire to profit by the word of God, must beware of prejudices against places, or denominations of men. They should examine for themselves, and they will sometimes find good where they looked for none. Many people are kept from the ways of religion by the unreasonable prejudices they…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 48-49Jesus gained Nathanael’s attention by showing that he knew his character (1:47). Then Jesus showed that he knew Nathanael’s earlier actions, even though they had not met before. This supernatural knowledge (knowledge beyond normal human ability) amazed Nathanael. He saw this as a sign from God and responded with faith. Nathanael had witnessed a miracle. As a result, he made a strong confession about who Jesus is.Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 4949. Son of God ... King of Israel--the one denoting His person, the other His office. How much loftier this than anything Philip had said to him! But just as the earth's vital powers, the longer they are frost-bound, take the greater spring when at length set free, so souls, like Nathanael and Thomas (see on Joh 20:28), the outgoings of whose faith are hindered for a time, take the start of their more easy-going brethren when loosed and let go.Read the comment
