Context of John 20:28
26Eight days later the disciples were again inside, and Thomas was with them. Yeshua comes, despite the locked doors. He stood in their midst and said, “Shalom aleichem!” 27Then He said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and look at My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Stop doubting and believe!” Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” 29Yeshua said to Him, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed? Blessed are the ones who have not seen and yet have believed!” 30Yeshua performed many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book.

Commentaries on John 20:28
- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 28Thomas answered, etc. - Those who deny the Godhead of Christ would have us to believe that these words are an exclamation of Thomas, made through surprise, and that they were addressed to the Father and not to Christ. Theodore of Mopsuestia was the first, I believe, who gave the words this turn; and the fifth Ecumenic council, held at Constantinople, anathematized him for it. This was not according to the spirit of the Gospel of God. However, a man must…Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 28My Lord and my God - In this passage the name God is expressly given to Christ, in his own presence and by one of his own apostles. This declaration has been considered as a clear proof of the divinity of Christ, for the following reasons: 1. There is no evidence that this was a mere expression, as some have supposed, of surprise or astonishment. 2. The language was addressed to Jesus himself - “Thomas said unto him.” 3. The Saviour did not reprove him…Read the comment

The religious observance of that day has come down to us through every age of the church. There is not an unbelieving word in our tongues, nor thought in our…Read the comment
