Context of Acts 10:13

11He saw the heavens opened, and something like a great sheet coming down, lowered by its four corners to the earth. 12In it were all sorts of four-footed animals and reptiles and birds of the air. A voice came to him, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.” 14But Peter said, “Certainly not, Lord! For never have I eaten anything unholy or unclean.” 15Again a voice came to him, a second time: “What God has made clean, you must not consider unholy.”

Commentaries on Acts 10:13

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 13Rise, Peter, kill and eat - , Sacrifice and eat. Though this verb is sometimes used to signify the slaying of animals for food, yet, as the proper notion is to slay for the purpose of sacrifice, it appears to me to be better to preserve that meaning here. Animals that were offered in sacrifice were considered as given to God; and, when he received the life, the flesh was given to those who offered the sacrifice, that they might feed upon it; and every…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 9-18Verses 9-18 The prejudices of Peter against the Gentiles, would have prevented his going to Cornelius, unless the Lord had prepared him for this service. To tell a Jew that God had directed those animals to be reckoned clean which were hitherto deemed unclean, was in effect saying, that the law of Moses was done away. Peter was soon made to know the meaning of it. God knows what services are before us, and how to prepare us; and we know the meaning of…Read the comment
