Context of Matthew 14:8

6But when Herod’s birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod. 7Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask. And she, being before instructed by her mother, said, Give me here the head of John the Baptist on a platter. 9And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the sake of the oath and them who sat eating with him, he commanded it to be given her . 10And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 8Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger - The word charger formerly signified a large dish, bowl, or drinking cup: the Saxon has a dish, Tindal, a platter; any thing is better than charger, which never conveyed much meaning, and now conveys none. The evangelist says she was instructed before, by her mother, to ask the Baptist's head! What a most infernal mother, to give such instructions to her child! and what a promising daughter to receive them!…Read the comment
