Context of Luke 22:51

49When they who were about him saw what would follow, they said to him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword? 50And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. And Jesus answered and said, Permit ye even this. And he touched his ear, and healed him. 52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, who had come to him, Are ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staffs? 53When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 51Suffer ye thus far - Or, Suffer me to go thus far. As they had now a firm hold of Christ, Matthew 26:50, he wished them to permit him to go as far as Malchus, whose ear was cut off, that he might heal it. See the objections brought against this interpretation answered by Kypke; and see the examples he produces. However, the words may be understood as an address to his disciples: Let them proceed; make no resistance; for in this way only are the Scriptures…Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 47-53Verses 47-53 See this explained in Matthew 26:48-56. Luke 22:48 Betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss? - By the “Son of man” was evidently meant “the Messiah.” Judas had had the most satisfactory evidence of that, and did not doubt it. A kiss was the sign of affection. By that slight artifice Judas thought to conceal his base purpose. Jesus with severity reproaches him for it. Every word is emphatic. “Betrayest” thou - dost thou violate all thy…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 47-53Verses 47-53 Nothing can be a greater affront or grief to the Lord Jesus, than to be betrayed by those who profess to be his followers, and say that they love him. Many instances there are, of Christ's being betrayed by those who, under the form of godliness, fight against the power of it. Jesus here gave an illustrious example of his own rule of doing good to those that hate us, as afterwards he did of praying for those that despitefully use us. Corrupt…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 51He touched the man’s ear and healed him: The Gospel of John tells us that the man’s name was Malchus and that Peter was the one who cut off his ear (John 18:10). Peter probably believed that he was beginning the final battle and that God’s heavenly army was about to appear and destroy the Romans. When Jesus refused to fight, the frightened disciples ran away (Matthew 26:56; Mark 14:50).Read the comment
