Context of Luke 11:50

48Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres. 49Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute: That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; 51From the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say to you, It shall be required of this generation. 52Woe to you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye have not entered in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 50That the blood - That the particle may be translated so that, pointing out the event only, not the design or intention, Bishop Pearce has well shown in his note on this place, where he refers to a like use of the word in Luke 9:45; Luke 14:10; John 10:17; Romans 5:20; Romans 11:11; 1 Corinthians 1:15, 1 Corinthians 1:31, etc.Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 47-51Verses 47-51 See the notes at Matthew 23:29-36. Luke 11:49 The wisdom of God - By the “wisdom of God,” here, is undoubtedly meant the Saviour himself. What he immediately says is not written in the Old Testament. Jesus is called “the word of God” John 1:1, because he is the medium by which God “speaks” or makes his will known. He is called “the wisdom of God,” because by him God makes his wisdom known in creation (Colossians 1:13-18 and in redemption 1…Read the comment
• Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 37-54Verses 37-54 We should all look to our hearts, that they may be cleansed and new-created; and while we attend to the great things of the law and of the gospel, we must not neglect the smallest matter God has appointed. When any wait to catch something out of our mouths, that they may insnare us, O Lord, give us thy prudence and thy patience, and disappoint their evil purposes. Furnish us with such meekness and patience that we may glory in reproaches, for…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 42-52Woe to you Pharisees! Woes are the opposite of blessings (see study note on 6:24–26). Jesus pronounced six woes. Three were against the Pharisees (11:42, 43, 44) and three were against the teachers of religious law (11:46, 47, 52).Read the comment
• Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 49-5149-51. said the wisdom, &c.--a remarkable variation of the words in Mt 23:34, "Behold I SEND." As there seems plainly an allusion to ancient warnings of what God would do with so incorrigible a people, so here Christ, stepping majestically into the place of God, so to speak, says, "Now I am going to carry all that out." Could this be other than the Lord of Israel in the flesh?Read the comment
