Ecclesiastes 5
Revised Version 1895
1Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of GodH430; for to drawH3318 nigh to hear is betterH5921 thanH5921 to giveH1961 the sacrifice of fools: for they know notH408 that they doH408 evil. 2Be notH3588 rash with thy month, and let notH3588 thine heart be hasty to utter anyH3588 thingH1697 before God; for God is in heaven, and thou uponH935 earth: therefore let thy wordsH1697 be few. 3For a dream cometh with a multitude of business; and a fool’sH3684 voice with a multitude of words. 4When thou vowest a vowH5087 unto GodH3808, defer notH3808 to payH7999 it; for he hath noH3808 pleasure in fools: payH7999 that whichH834 thou vowest. 5BetterH3027 is it that thou shouldest notH408 vowH3027, thanH5921 that thou shouldest vowH3027 and notH408 payH5414. 6Suffer notH3588 thy mouth to causeH1697 thy flesh to sin; neither sayH1697 thou beforeH430 the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should GodH430 be angry at thy voice, and destroy the workH1697 of thine hands? 7For thus it cometh to pass throughH5921 the multitude of dreams and vanities and many words: but fear thou God. 8IfH1931 thou seest the oppression of the poor, and the violent taking awayH3605 of judgment and justice in a province, marvel notH776 at the matter: for one higher thanH4428 the high regardeth; and there be higher thanH4428 they. 9MoreoverH1571 the profit of the earth is for allH1571: the king himselfH3808 is served by the field. 10He that loveth silver shall notH518 be satisfied with silver; norH518 he that loveth abundanceH7235 with increaseH7235: this also is vanity. 11When goods increaseH7235, they are increasedH7235 that eatH398 them: and what advantage is there to the owner thereof, saving the beholding of them with his eyes? 12The sleep of a labouring manH1167 is sweet, whetherH7200 he eat little or much: but the fulness of the richH6239 will not suffer him to sleep. 13There is a grievous evilH7451, whichH1931 I have seen underH3027 the sun, namely, richesH6239 kept by the owner thereof to his hurt: 14and thoseH834 riches perish by evil adventure; and ifH834 he hath begotten a son, there is nothingH3808 in his handH3027. 15As he cameH935 forth of his mother’s womb, naked shall he goH935 again as he cameH935, and shall takeH935 nothingH3605 for his labour, whichH7307 he may carryH935 awayH3605 in his hand. 16And this also is a grievous evil, that in allH3605 points as he came, soH1571 shall he go: and whatH1571 profit hath he that he laboureth for the wind? 17AllH3605 his daysH3117 also he eateth in darkness, and he is sore vexed and hath sickness and wrath. 18Behold, that whichH834 I have seen to be good and to be comely is for one to eatH398 and to drink, and to enjoy good in allH3605 his labour, whereinH834 he laboureth underH4480 the sun, allH3605 the days of his life whichH834 GodH430 hath givenH5414 him: for this is his portionH2506. 19EveryH3117 man also to whom GodH430 hath given riches and wealthH3808, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to takeH2142 his portion, and to rejoiceH8057 in his labour; this is the gift of GodH430. 20For he shall not much remember the days of his life; because God answereth him in the joy of his heart.
