Context of Mark 8:5
3And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far. 4And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness? And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven. 6And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people. 7And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them.

- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5Seven: Many people have tried to find symbolic meaning in the numbers in the two feeding miracles. However, there is no agreement among these interpretations. The mention of "a few fish" in this story also suggests that the numbers are not symbolic. None of the Gospel writers explain any special meaning for these numbers. This should caution us not to assign meaning to them. As with the feeding of the five thousand, the numbers mainly serve to highlight…Read the comment
- Jamieson–Fausset–Brown Commentary · v. 55. And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven--It was important in this case, as in the former, that the precise number of the loaves should be brought out. Thus also does the distinctness of the two miracles appear.Read the comment
