Context of Isaiah 33:8
6And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of thy times, and strength of salvation: the fear of Yhwh is his treasure. 7Behold, their valiant ones shall cry without: the ambassadors of peace shall weep bitterly. The highways lie waste, the wayfaring man ceaseth: he hath broken the covenant, he hath despised the cities, he regardeth no man. 9The earth mourneth and languisheth: Lebanon is ashamed and hewn down: Sharon is like a wilderness; and Bashan and Carmel shake off their fruits. 10Now will I rise, saith Yhwh; now will I be exalted; now will I lift up myself.

Commentaries on Isaiah 33:8
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8The highways lie waste - This verse contains a description of the desolations that had been caused by the invasion of Sennacherib. Some have understood it as containing the account which the ambassadors sent by Hezekiah gave of the effects of the invasion. Thus Grotius interprets it. But it is probably a description made by the prophet himself, and is designed to state one cause why the messengers that had been sent out wept bitterly. They had not only…Read the comment
