Context of Isaiah 33:8
6Wisdom and knowledge will be the stability of your times, And the strength of salvation; The fear of the Lord is His treasure. 7Surely their valiant ones shall cry outside, The ambassadors of peace shall weep bitterly. The highways lie waste, The traveling man ceases. He has broken the covenant, He has despised the cities, He regards no man. 9The earth mourns and languishes, Lebanon is shamed and shriveled; Sharon is like a wilderness, And Bashan and Carmel shake off their fruits. 10“Now I will rise,” says the Lord; “Now I will be exalted, Now I will lift Myself up.

- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 8The highways lie waste - This verse contains a description of the desolations that had been caused by the invasion of Sennacherib. Some have understood it as containing the account which the ambassadors sent by Hezekiah gave of the effects of the invasion. Thus Grotius interprets it. But it is probably a description made by the prophet himself, and is designed to state one cause why the messengers that had been sent out wept bitterly. They had not only…Read the comment
