Context of Haggai 2:5
3Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing? 4Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith Yhwh; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith Yhwh, and work: for I am with you, saith Yhwh of Armies: According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not. 6For thus saith Yhwh of Armies; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land; 7And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith Yhwh of Armies.

Commentaries on Haggai 2:5
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5The words which I covenanted - The words stand more forcibly, because abruptly. It is an exclamation which cannot be forced into any grammatical relation with the preceding. The more exact idiom would have been “Remember,” “take to heart.” But the prophet points to it the more energetically, because he casts it, as it were, into the midst, not bound up with any one verb. This would be the rather done in speaking to the people, as David to his followers (1…Read the comment

Haggai’s phrase, “cut a word,” is unique in the Old Testament. It uses language that intentionally links his prophecy to God’s covenant with his people. By making this connection, Haggai emphasized the…Read the comment
