Context of Haggai 2:5
3‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Doesn’t it seem to you like nothing by comparison? 4Even so, be strong, Zerubbabel — this is the Lord’s declaration. Be strong, Joshua son of Jehozadak, high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land — this is the Lord’s declaration. Work! For I am with you — the declaration of the Lord of Armies. This is the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt, and my Spirit is present among you; don’t be afraid.’” 6For the Lord of Armies says this: “Once more, in a little while, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. 7I will shake all the nations so that the treasures of all the nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,” says the Lord of Armies.

Commentaries on Haggai 2:5
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 5The words which I covenanted - The words stand more forcibly, because abruptly. It is an exclamation which cannot be forced into any grammatical relation with the preceding. The more exact idiom would have been “Remember,” “take to heart.” But the prophet points to it the more energetically, because he casts it, as it were, into the midst, not bound up with any one verb. This would be the rather done in speaking to the people, as David to his followers (1…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 5My Spirit remains among you: See Exodus 29:46; Isaiah 63:11; Ezekiel 36:26–27. This is the promise I made to you (literally the word I cut with you): The phrase “cut a covenant” is a Hebrew expression for making a covenant (see Genesis 15:18; Exodus 34:27). Haggai’s phrase, “cut a word,” is unique in the Old Testament. It uses language that intentionally links his prophecy to God’s covenant with his people. By making this connection, Haggai emphasized the…Read the comment
