Context of Ezekiel 15:7

5Behold, when it was whole, it was meet for no work: how much less shall it be meet yet for any work, when the fire hath devoured it, and it is burned? 6Therefore thus saith the Lord Yhwh; As the vine tree among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so will I give the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And I will set my face against them; they shall go out from one fire, and another fire shall devour them; and ye shall know that I am Yhwh, when I set my face against them. 8And I will make the land desolate, because they have committed a trespass, saith the Lord Yhwh.

• Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7They shall go out from one fire, and another fire shall devour them - If they escape the sword, they shall perish by the famine; if they escape the famine, they shall be led away captives. To escape will be impossible. It will be to them according to the proverb: - Incidit in Scyllam, cupiens vitare Charybdim. "Out of the scald, into the flame."Read the comment
• Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7They shall go out … - Rather, they have gone forth from the fire, and the fire shall devour them. The condition of the people is here depicted. The people of Israel - as a whole and as separate kingdoms - had become worthless. The branch torn from the living stem had truly been cast into the fire, which had devoured both ends of it; what remained was a brand plucked from the burning. Those who had escaped the general calamity were reserved for a like…Read the comment
• Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 7Anyone who escaped one “fire” of God’s judgment would not truly be safe. Here, “fire” is a picture of severe judgment. This first fire likely refers to the defeat of Judah by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon in 597 BC (2 Kings 21:1–4). Some people survived that attack and were taken into exile. But those who escaped that disaster would soon face another one. This second fire refers to the final destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC. In other words, escaping…Read the comment
