Context of Ezekiel 15:7
5When the vine was in perfect condition, it couldn’t be made into anything. How can it be used to make anything after the fire has burned and charred it? 6“So this is what the Almighty Lord says: As a vine is taken from among the trees in the forest to be used to feed the fire, so I will take the people who live in Jerusalem to punish them. I will turn against the people of Jerusalem. Even though they have escaped one fire, another fire will burn them. Then they will know that I am the Lord, because I will turn against them. 8I will turn the country into a wasteland because they have been unfaithful,” declares the Almighty Lord.

- Adam Clarke Bible Commentary · v. 7They shall go out from one fire, and another fire shall devour them - If they escape the sword, they shall perish by the famine; if they escape the famine, they shall be led away captives. To escape will be impossible. It will be to them according to the proverb: - Incidit in Scyllam, cupiens vitare Charybdim. "Out of the scald, into the flame."Read the comment
- Barnes’ Notes on the Bible · v. 7They shall go out - Rather, they have gone forth from the fire, and the fire shall devour them. The condition of the people is here depicted. The people of Israel - as a whole and as separate kingdoms - had become worthless. The branch torn from the living stem had truly been cast into the fire, which had devoured both ends of it; what remained was a brand plucked from the burning. Those who had escaped the general calamity were reserved for a like…Read the comment

This first fire likely refers to the defeat of Judah by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon in 597 BC (2 Kings 21:1–4). Some people survived that attack and were taken into exile. But those who escaped that disaster would soon face another one. This second fire refers to the final destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC. In other words, escaping…Read the comment
