Context of Mark 9:37
35He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said, “Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else.” 36Then he put a little child among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, “Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not only me but also my Father who sent me.” 38John said to Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone using your name to cast out demons, but we told him to stop because he wasn’t in our group.” 39“Don’t stop him!” Jesus said. “No one who performs a miracle in my name will soon be able to speak evil of me.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 30-40Verses 30-40 The time of Christ's suffering drew nigh. Had he been delivered into the hands of devils, and they had done this, it had not been so strange; but that men should thus shamefully treat the Son of man, who came to redeem and save them, is wonderful. Still observe that when Christ spake of his death, he always spake of his resurrection, which took the reproach of it from himself, and should have taken the grief of it from his disciples. - Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 36-37In the time of Jesus, people did not view children as especially innocent or pure. Instead, they saw them as weak and of low status. Jesus said that people should receive a child in his name (that is, as his representative). Welcoming a child shows humility. It means choosing a low place and serving others (9:35; see also 10:13–16).
