Context of Mark 8:30
28“Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say you are one of the other prophets.” 29Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?” Peter replied, “You are the Messiah.” But Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him. 31Then Jesus began to tell them that the Son of Man must suffer many terrible things and be rejected by the elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of religious law. He would be killed, but three days later he would rise from the dead. 32As he talked about this openly with his disciples, Peter took him aside and began to reprimand him for saying such things.

- Matthew Henry Concise Commentary · v. 27-33Verses 27-33 These things are written, that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. These miracles of our Lord assure us that he was not conquered, but a Conqueror. Now the disciples are convinced that Jesus is the Christ; they may bear to hear of his sufferings, of which Christ here begins to give them notice. He sees that amiss in what we say and do, of which we ourselves are not aware, and knows what manner of spirit we are of, when we…Read the comment
- Tyndale Open Study Notes · v. 29-30Who do you say I am?: In the Greek text, the word you is emphatic. Peter spoke for the group, saying, You are the Christ. Peter’s confession was correct, as the command not to tell anyone about him shows (see 3:11–12; see also 1:1; 14:61–62; Matthew 16:17).Read the comment
